GTINs: Frequently Asked Questions
Are these GTINs refundable?
The issued GTINs are non refundable. Once the numbers are issues, they cannot be reused.
What is the difference between GTIN, EAN & UPC?
GTIN, EAN & UPC are all barcodes used for trading. GTINS & EANs barcodes are 14 digits long and are used internationally. UPC barcodes are 13 digits long and are primaraly used in the USA. It's recommended to use 14 digits long barcodes. Read more about the GTIN attribute in the feeds from Google support.
Does this app sell registered GTINs?
This app sells unique working GTINs. These GTINs are not registered for a specific brand or company and do not need to be renewed annually.
I have branded products, can I use these GTINs?
Yes, you can, but this is not adviced. With some brands it's known to Google which GTIN ranges the brand has. In this case you will get a message that the GTIN is not matching the brand.
In general, if you know there is a registered GTIN for a specific product, it's best to use that GTIN. You can of course try non registered GTINs. In many cases they work. Especially for smaller brands.
Do this GTINs work for everything?
These GTINs work for Google Shopping and many other market places.
In some cases the market place will recognise the brand of your product. If this brand has a known registered GTIN, it is likely that those GTINs (products) will not be approved by the market place. Some market places (like Amazon) require merchant to only have brand registered GTINs. Please test with a free/few GTINs first.
How long does it take before GTINs are updated in Google Merchant or other market place?
Our app adds GTINs to the variants in Shopify. You can check it by going to the product and looking up the barcode field of the variants which are updated. You can also monitor the progress of addition in the app if you chose to auto add
the GTINs.
After the GTINs are added to products in Shopify (manually or automatically), then the next step is for another app (usually an app which generated feeeds) to send the GTINs to the market place. You might need to regenerate the feed or sync the apps in some way. It might update everything automatically within some time frame too (24 hours usually). It's best to talk to the app developer which handles the data transfer from Shopify to the market place for details.
How long will these GTINs keep working
These GTINs do not require annual registration. They will keep working as long as market place doesn not require a brand registered barcode.
Can GTINs be shared between stores?
Yes and no. In theory you can install the app in one store, download a CSV and use the GTIN from the CSV in any store or any place. In this case you will not be able to use auto add gtins
feature, which scans the store for which the app is installed to make sure the GTINs are not duplicated / reused. Also you will need to make sure that same GTIN is not used for a different product on another store. This will create confusion on market places.
